Shapes Recognition with Wax Crayon and Candle

Items: Candle, wax crayons, tempera paint / water color, cartridge paper / drawing block paper, stencils, paint brush, containers and water.

Method: Use the candle or the wax crayon to rub on the paper with the stencil on top.

Dilute the water color / tempera paint with water.

* To save cost, you can just buy black, white and 3 primary colors : red, yellow and blue. From these, you can make secondary colors : Red + yellow = orange, yellow + blue = green, blue + red = purple. To make the colors darker or lighter, just mix either white or black.

Start painting.

As Maya got too excited with painting, I had to use tissue paper to dab off excess water from the painting. Remember, dab, don't rub. From my experimentation, I prefer water color rather than using tempera paint as it gives a more obvious effect. Do make a few pieces in advance so when your child finishes with one piece, you can give a new piece immediately without disrupting the flow. This is also a good way to encourage them to count. For instance, from painting one elephant per piece, the next piece can be two elephants and so on and so forth. It's easier to get them to paint than to sit them down with a stack of flash cards.
